Food Allergy
FOOD ALLERGY PATIENTS
Proactive Approach to Your Health
Dr. Federly is committed to providing comprehensive care for her patients with food allergies. She will discuss strategies to help prevent food allergies for infants at high risk, such as those with significant eczema or those with siblings with food allergies. Guidelines recommend early introduction of peanut products to these infants, and in some cases oral food challenges may be necessary. An oral food challenge involves gradually introducing a food to a patient, under the supervision of Dr. Federly, to confirm or rule out a food allergy.
Our allergy clinic offers oral immunotherapy (OIT) which is a treatment program that induces the immune system to tolerate a food that has caused an allergic reaction. Starting with a very small dose, the food is slowly reintroduced to the patient, under the supervision of Dr. Federly. The dose that is tolerated in our clinic is continued at home daily and doses are gradually increased in our clinic weekly over 6 to 12 months. At the completion of the program, the vast majority of patients are able to consume the food without any adverse reactions. Our OIT program provides a long-term solution for patients allergic to peanut, almond, cashew, pistachio, walnut, pecan, hazelnut, sesame, milk, egg and wheat. We clinic offers OIT to select patients ages 9 months and above.
Our allergy clinic also offers sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) which is a different treatment program that induces the immune system to tolerate a food that has caused an allergic reaction. Starting with an even smaller dose, the food is slowly reintroduced to the patient with 4 visits every 2 months in the clinic under the supervision of Dr. Federly with other doses given at home. After 1-2 years of sublingual drops, the vast majority of patients are protected against accidental exposure to the food. Our SLIT program provides a long-term solution for patients allergic to peanut, cashew, walnut, hazelnut, sesame, milk, egg and wheat. Our of clinic offers SLIT to select patients ages 2 years and above.
For the initial evaluation, Dr. Federly will obtain a detailed history and perform a physical examination as well as blood testing and skin prick testing to food if necessary. Based on the evaluation an oral food challenge may be recommended at a future visit. If a patient is eligible for the OIT or SLIT program, Dr. Federly will provide an in-depth consultation to discuss the program at a different visit and make sure these treatment options are a good fit for the patient and their family. Dr. Federly has been performing OIT since 2013 and started SLIT in 2025. She is excited to join you and your family on your OIT or SLIT journey.
